Prions Imam Mohamed Rawat, 49, Caught Taking Drugs worth £60,000 into Jail in London

A Muslim Imam, Mohamed Rawat, 46, was caught at Belmarsh jail allegedly carrying more than 60 sheets of paper soaked in spice.

Mohamed Rawat is said to have been stopped at the jail carrying more than 60 sheets of paper soaked in spice, a synthetic substance whose effect is similar to cannabis but stronger. Its street value is estimated at £60,000.

The 49-year-old imam was dramatically detained at the prison gates after a secret probe by the anti-corruption unit at the Category A jail in South East London.

Mr Rawat, 49, was detained at the prison gates after an investigation by an anti-corruption unit at the high-security jail in southeast London. Rawat has been banned from going back to the prison while he is under investigation.

All prisons now seize letters and books sent to inmates and give them photocopies, in case the originals are saturated in spice.

The jail now has sniffer dogs, a body-scanner machine in the reception area and an ‘itemiser’ that can test for drugs in the post room.

A spokesman for the Prison Service told The Mail on Sunday: ‘Drugs fuel instability and violence behind bars and we are determined to do everything possible to stop them from entering our prisons.
