Twitter refuses Pakistan’s request to block extremist Khadim Rizvi’s account

Twitter authorities have denied Pakistan’s request to block the accounts of Khadim Rizvi for threatening the state and its institutions.

Thousands of TLP protesters brought Pakistan to a standstill during its recent protest, burning rickshaws, cars and lorries to protest against the acquittal of a Christian woman by SC who spent eight years on death row on false charges of blasphemy.

TLP threatened to kill the judges and destroyed the public properties during its recent protest.

Mazari was responding to a tweet of author Ayesha Siddiqa who questioned her whether her ministry had gotten in touch with Facebook and Twitter to block the social media accounts associated with Tehreek-i-Labbaik chief Khadim Hussain Rizvi, who had largely spearheaded the protests against the SC verdict.

Mazari responded that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority had been “asked to do this by the relevant minister on Friday, and I am shocked it hasn’t happened”.

She added: “Just checked with the information minister, who was informed that Twitter refusing our request.”

The Federal minister further wrote, “appeasement to “avoid bloodshed” sends a dangerous message to non-state actors and undermines the very concept of democratic peaceful protest. The State has to enforce the Rule of Law, Constitution and stand by state institutions especially when they are targeted”.
