Man was sentenced to nine years in jail by a US court after being charged with aggravated assault of a woman who was seated next to him on a US flight from Las Vegas to Detroit.
Prabhu Ramamoorthy, 34, was sitting between his wife and another woman. When the other woman fell asleep he unbuttoned her clothes and assaulted her.
She woke up to find her shirt and trousers unbuttoned and his hand in her trousers. The 22-year-old fled to the back on the plane and alerted flight attendants of the assault.
Crew members told federal investigators the victim was crying as she reported the incident 40 minutes before the plane’s landing, according to the Washington Post.
Ramamoorthy, 35, tech worker, based in Rochester Hills, Michigan was in the middle seat, with his wife sat on the aisle and the victim in the window seat.
Ramamoorthy sat just inches away from his wife as he carried out the attack. He tried to claim he had taken a very strong sleeping pill and wouldn't have been able to knowingly carry out the attack. It was later proven to be regular Tylenol and he soon admitted his guilt to investigators.
However, the man’s wife alleged that the woman had been sleeping on her husband’s knees and they had requested the flight attendant to change her seat. The flight attendants denied these allegations and confirmed instead that only the alleged victim had asked for her seat to be changed.
The attendants also said that she had been crying when she came to them and the buttons on her shirt and trousers had been undone and they assigned her another seat at the back of the plane.
Prabhu Ramamoorthy was residing in the states on a work visa when he assaulted a young woman on an Spirit Airlines flight, on January 3. He will be immediately deported back to India once he has served his time.
