Nabeel Choudhary, 20, from Hope Street, West Bromwich, has been charged with murder and was due before Walsall Magistrates' Court on Saturday.
Mr Choudhary has also been charged with possession of an imitation firearm with criminal intent.
Three other people who were arrested on suspicion of murder, and a 21-year-old woman held on suspicion of assisting an offender, have since been released pending further investigation.
Police launched a murder investigation after shop owner Yasir Hussain, 34, was fatally wounded on Tuesday evening in Dudley, 10 miles north-west of Birmingham, where he had been visiting family.
A post-mortem examination found Mr Hussain, of Lancashire, died from stab wounds to his back.
He was pronounced dead at the scene in the Lower Gornal area after 9.40pm on Tuesday.
Yasir, who co-owned Spar on Melville Street, Burnley, was visiting relatives in Birmingham and went to the takeaway, on Central Drive, to get some food with his cousin shortly after 9.30pm.
He was described as a caring and loving family man and father of 4 children, Adil, 13, 8 years old Azaan, Malaika, 11 and Hazan aged 4 years.
Detective Inspector Jim Colclough from West Midlands Police’s Homicide Team, said: “This is such a tragic waste of a life. My thoughts remain with the victim’s family who have been kept fully updated with this development."
