Derby gang jailed for more than 10 years after major Class A drugs operation

A Derby gang who ran a major drugs operation in the city have been jailed for more than 10 years.

Waqar Ashfaq, Adil Ali, Brian Dawson, Elizabeth Dean and Tracey Powell stood at Derby Crown Court on Friday after pleading guilty to conspiracy to supply Class A drugs.




Waqar Ashfaq, known as “Sammy”, played a “leading role” in the conspiracy by co-ordinating the group.



Ashfaq operated three phones that he used to talk to people who wanted to be supplied. These were called 'Sammy Lines'.

''He had three phone lines that were contacted by users who wanted drugs such as heroin and crack cocaine. There is evidence the numbers were changed multiple times.



 Mr Ashfaq also had a girlfriend in Sheffield and during that time in the city, that did not stop him from co-ordinating the group.



Ali, who was 17 at the time of the offence, served underneath Ashfaq, Ali supplied police with drugs on five occasions and at one point had 100 wraps of drugs on him.



Police raid on Ali’s house, officers found 95 wraps of crack cocaine, 58 wraps of heroin and 22 grams of a “brown substance” inside a wrapped bag which is believed to have been used to cut drugs. They also found £3,860 worth of cash.



Ashfaq, 21, of Darby Street, Derby, was sentenced to six years imprisonment for conspiracy to supply Class A drugs.

Ali, 18, of Crewe Street, Derby sentenced to 28 months in jail for conspiracy to supply Class A drugs.

Dawson, 43, of Stockbrook Street, Derby, was sentenced to 15 months for conspiracy to supply Class A drugs.

Powell, 37, of Mount Street, Derby, was sentenced to 16 months for conspiracy to supply Class A drugs.

Dean, 28, of no fixed abode, was given a 16-month suspended sentence and given a six-month drugs rehabilitation course.
