Rahul Pandey, 18, of Mottingham, south-east London, who fell asleep at the wheel’ and killed pensioner in head-on crash near Biggin Hill and seriously injured her husband in a head-on crash has been jailed for five years.
Accident happened at 2.30am on October 11 last year as Pandey was heading home from a shift at a restaurant.
Rahul Pandey crashed his car on the A233 near Biggin Hill, smashed into car of Angila Conington, 47, as she drove her parents Shirley Conington, 75, and David, 76, to the airport for a holiday to Spain.
Elderly woman Shirley died on spot while David suffered serious injuries including a fractured pelvis.
When police arrived, teenager said that he had fallen asleep at the wheel, but he later retracted his statement to police and said that he was “wide awake” but had simply lost control of the car while driving too fast.
The court heard Pandey was convicted as a 15-year-old of joyriding when he stole and crashed his father’s car.
But he gained his driving licence aged 17, just seven weeks before the fatal crash.
He was guilty in court to causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving, has been jailed for five years.
He was also banned from driving for the next six-and-a-half years and must take an extended test to get his licence back.
